 The Environment Commission has had slow pace recognized Congresswoman Lourdes Palacios, fifth Secretary of the Legislative Assembly and member of the Environment and Climate Change Commission, a she evaluates the progress of the legislature that is about conclude.

"It has not been possible to advance discussion on issues that are critical to the Salvadoran population in areas such a as the General Water Law, Metal Mining, Solid Waste Management and Pesticides Convention. They touch many economic interests," she said.

- How is the discussion on the General Water Law progressing?

Unfortunately for ARENA to talk about water is a thorny issue. They always sought to privatize the resource, privatize services the National Water and Sewage Administration(ANDA) and  let the market set the price of this resource, leave to the whims of supply and demand.

The National Round Table Against Mining is concerned that municipal and legislative assembly candidates appear to have no interest in environmental issues such as mining.

Murdered environmental activists remembered

Lack of protections and reparations for those affected by human rights violations in mining affected communities is regretful states the Human Rights Ombudsman of El Salvador.  

cabanas1Several hundred anti-mining activists from mining affected communities in Cabañas arrived at the San Salvador Cathedral this past Sunday to participate in a special service to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the murder of five environmental activists in Cabanas.    

“We are here to celebrate lives of those who died for their opposition to the El Dorado mining project” said Alejandro Guevara, an anti-mining activist from the community of La Maraña.  

“We also want to reiterate our demands that the Office of the Attorney General conducts a thorough investigation of the murders to find both material and intellectual authors of these crimes, that the government implements a law to prohibit metallic mining, and that OceanaGold leaves our territory” he continued.

When Corporations Sue Governments

In 2004, the Pacific Rim mining company applied to dig for gold in El Salvador. Pacific Rim (since acquired by the Canadian-Australian company OceanaGold) assured the government of then-President Antonio Saca that its work would be eco-friendly and would generate jobs. But with 90 percent of the country’s surface water contaminated, and fearing damage to the Lempa River — an essential source of water for El Salvador’s 6 million people — the administration failed to approve the proposal. In 2008, Mr. Saca instituted a moratorium on new mining permits; to date, this has been maintained and is widely popular. (READ MORE)

SECOND MUNICIPALITY DECLARED FREE OF METAL MINING IN EL SALVADOR

Territorial organization to strengthen local democracy a key strategy for anti-mining activists in the country's unpredictable political environment.

san isidro1The municipality of San Isidro Labrador was declared free of mining after 98.74% of the registered voters who cast a ballot in a referendum held on Sunday November 23 said no mining.

This is the second municipality to hold a local mining consultation in the region that has since 2004 been impacted by four known mining exploration concessions covering an area close to 200 square Kilometres.

Social organizations demand the approval of Food Security Legislation in El Salvador

wfdSocial organizations took to the streets of San Salvador to demand the adoption of a Law on Food Sovereignty and to ratify the constitutional reform to Article 69, to recognize the human rights to water and food.

The United Nations decreed that October cada16 commemorate "World Food Day" in order to raise awareness to the governments and peoples of the world on the problems of hunger, malnutrition and poverty that affect large groups of populations.

Doris Evangelista, from the Roundtable for Food Sovereignty, criticized the reluctance of right wing parties in the Legislature to approve the General Water Law and the Food Sovereignty.
